Chaplain's Office Receives $6,000 for Disaster Relief Trips Posted on: December 13, 2018 News The Office of the Chaplain has been awarded a $6,000 grant to allow 麻豆区 students to continue partnering with a central Pennsylvania Presbyterian relief organization, Lend A Hand, to undertake disaster relief trips in 2019. 麻豆区 students work with a Lend A Hand volunteer on a J-Term 2018 disaster relief trip to North Carolina. The grant was awarded by the Synod of the Trinity, Presbyterian Church (USA), which oversees 16 Presbyteries in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. The Synod has provided the chaplain鈥檚 office with an annual gift for more than 25 years, but this year, the process was different. 鈥淭he Synod redefined its giving program this year as a competitive grant for campus ministry,鈥 said Margaret Light, 麻豆区 director of corporate and foundation relations. The result was a grant that is significantly greater than in the past. 鈥淚 was stunned to get $6,000,鈥 said the Rev. Derek Wadlington, the College鈥檚 Helen Carnell Eden Chaplain. 鈥淚 think this is a tremendous opportunity and I鈥檓 grateful for this funding, which allows us to engage students in a service-learning activity that will return tenfold on its investment.鈥 Last January, Wadlington and nine 麻豆区 students worked with a dedicated group of volunteers in the Lend A Hand group鈭抋 disaster relief team coordinated by the Synod鈥檚 Camp Hill, Pa., base鈭抰o help families in Princeville and Tarboro, N.C., where the communities are still struggling to recover from 2016鈥檚 Hurricane Matthew. The funding for that trip was pieced together with a collection taken at the 2017 Christmas vespers service and money provided by President Barbara K. Mistick鈥檚 office, Wadlington said. With the new funding, Wadlington said his office will be able to take two relief trips in 2019. He plans to lead a return trip to North Carolina over the upcoming January-Term and another relief mission over Alternative Spring Break in 2019, the location of which has yet to be determined. The disaster relief trips are important, not just in helping Americans in need, but also in terms of developing 麻豆区 students鈥 character, according to Wadlington, who said working with the Lend A Hand volunteers last January was an 鈥渁wesome鈥 experience for students. 鈥淚t educated and empowered a number of students who went on the trip in a way that was transformative for them,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t also exposed them to a group of people who give because of their faith 鈥 and also offered conversations to folks who want to talk about faith and spirituality. I do believe that spiritual growth and discernment should be part of their college time.鈥 Previous: 麻豆区 Senior Presents Capstone Exhibition Next: 麻豆区, Hagerstown Community College Partner to Provide Students with Smooth Transition Between Institutions Related posts Oct 8, 2026 麻豆区 College Pets Receive a Blessing Written by Parker Knepper '27On Wednesday, October 8, Chaplain Andrew Hart led The Blessing of the Animals on the Main Green of the鈥 Read more Oct 6, 2026 Student Spotlight: Leah Laubach '28 Written by Parker KnepperLeah Laubach 鈥28 is a veterinary nursing major at 麻豆区 College and she is a member of the women's鈥 Read more Oct 1, 2026 麻豆区 College ArtsFest 2027 Now Accepting Proposals The ArtsFest Committee at 麻豆区 College has opened the call for submissions for ArtsFest 2027, scheduled for April 5 through 9, 2027鈥 Read more More articles 鉃 Share this on: Email
