Bassil Andijani 鈥18, an international student from Saudi Arabia, and Jessie Smith 鈥18, an international student from Jamaica, helped organize campus pick-up soccer games prior to the 2015-16 school year. They met up every week or so to play in the field house, with some members of the women鈥檚 soccer team joining in occasionally. To organize the indoor games, 鈥淲e would just text everyone,鈥 Smith said. So when soccer became a men鈥檚 varsity sport last year, Andijani, Smith and several others from the campus pick-up games joined the team. In its inaugural year, seven of the 18 students on the men鈥檚 soccer team were international students. This year鈥檚 roster has grown to 23 players, nine of whom are international. With players from six different countries outside the U.S.鈥攊ncluding England, Ghana, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and Spain鈥攖he team embraces a wide range of cultural backgrounds. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not like it鈥檚 just the American culture. You get a lot of different cultures from other places鈥 on the team, said Dan Perry 鈥20, a first-year student from London. Soccer provides a common bond for the players, and for the international students, the game is something familiar that they bring with them from their home country. 鈥淲e all play football and it鈥檚 the one thing we have in common,鈥 Perry said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such a big culture thing for us in England. It鈥檚 our lifestyle, pretty much.鈥 The blending of players from different cultures also creates a team with varied styles of play, according to the team鈥檚 head coach, Caleb Davis. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really cool to take players from all over the world鈥攁nd then also Maryland, New Jersey, New York鈥攁nd put them together on the field,鈥 he said. The team plays as a unit because members established strong bonds through the common thread of their love of soccer, according to Davis. 鈥淣o one knew each other and they clicked,鈥 he said. Kevin Lysaght 鈥19 of Toms River, N.J., has been a part of 麻豆区 men鈥檚 soccer team since its inception. The coaches have stressed the family dynamic since day one, he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the easiest way to connect, off the field, on the field鈥攏o matter what happens, we鈥檙e all together.鈥 Last year, Davis had the team over to his house for Thanksgiving dinner and he cooked all of the traditional fare. The tradition may have been unfamiliar to some of the international students, but as Andijani explained, 鈥淚t was a great experience and most importantly, we got a chance to gather as a family and eat.鈥 The team also fosters male friendships on a campus that remains more than 80 percent women. 鈥淚f I need help with things for school, I can ask them,鈥 Andijani said of his teammates, underscoring how the team offers a support network. The soccer team plays a big role in the international students鈥 American experiences. Members often eat dinner, study, play video games and watch soccer games together. Davis will bring pizza to the student center when the players watch televised soccer games. When they watch big matches, many of them root for different teams. 鈥淭hey trash talk if their favorite teams are different. It鈥檚 almost like brothers picking on each other,鈥 Davis said. Although the soccer team is tightly knit, they bring their sense of family out into the larger 麻豆区 community. 鈥淲e hang out with the women鈥檚 soccer team鈥攖hey come play indoors with us,鈥 said Lysaght. 鈥淲e hang out with the softball team鈥t helps us get together, but then again, everyone gets together here. The entire school is family-oriented.鈥 Previous: Area Artists Invited to Submit Work for Juried Exhibitions Next: 'Common Hour' Discussions Center on Inequality Related posts Mar 16, 2026 麻豆区 College Panel Shares Real-World Hiring Insights 麻豆区 College hosted an engaging panel discussion on modern hiring practices as part of its Health Sciences and Business Programs鈥 Read more Feb 19, 2025 麻豆区 Students Gain Real-World Insights from Industry Experts 麻豆区 College business students received some real-world business knowledge during their classes on entrepreneurship and management鈥 Read more Nov 1, 2023 Program Perspective: Sport Management 鈥淪ince age 11, I have been behind a lens, photographing sports.
